Las Trajieneras de Xochimilco, Mexico City

One of my favourite experiences in Mexico ever has to be riding the trajineras (boats) through the canals of what was the lake on which Mexico City was built.

The boats are all colourfully painted, and we brought along our own food and drinks for a picnic lunch, since the boats had a long table down the middle. As we traveled down the canals, music boats floated by with bands, mariachi trios, and marimba players, so we paid one to float alongside our boat and play songs upon request. We bought roasted corn on the cob from another trajinera on the canal, sang and danced, and had an amazing time!
