The Monday Morning Bounce Back: 3 Tips To Come Back From an Unproductive Work Week

Okay so last week was a throwaway week for me in terms of productivity. A brief explanation of what went down in the oh so glamourous life of Elle:

My baby cousin Ricardo (aka my Gemini heart who I love x100000) traveled to my place from Connecticut to drop off his beautiful bebes to hang with my son for the next few weeks. My family is extremely tight knit, so cousins operate like siblings, and siblings operate like obsessive fans basically (on that note, please check out my sister’s art at Canvases & Controversies, she’s the dopest).

Now that we’re all grown up with kids of our own, it’s really important to us that our kids form the same bond that we had growing up. So last week, I went from being the mother of one almost seven-year old, to the mother of four kids, aged nine, seven, six, and four. That’s four breakfasts, four packed lunches, four dinners, four bath times, four morning outfit arguments, all revolving around my son’s already hectic soccer, swimming, muay thai, and oh more soccer schedule.

Please. Send prayers.

So last week was probably not my most productive week as I navigated week one of three of what’s sure to be a lesson in patience for this #PrettyGirl, but we’ve all been there, right? Whether it’s life that gets in the way, or just one of those days where you’ve gotten yourself lost in a twitter hashtag black hole and emerged with no work to show for your day but a newly developed wealth of knowledge about Blue Ivy’s personal style choices as a freshly christened member of the #IvyLeague.

So now, it’s a new week, and the pressure is on. You’ve not only got to work your way out of this slump, you’ve got to do it with twice as much work as you had last week.

But you’ve got this, sis. Here are three tips to get you going:

  1. Don’t waste time stressing about it.

It is not the end of the world that you missed a deadline or delayed a response. Panicking about it only wastes more time and solves nothing. This literally happens to everyone, and you’ll be just fine. Push through. And you need a mini distraction to keep you from stressing, there are plenty of things you can absentmindedly do while getting down to business. I hear fidget spinners are really big right now …

  1. Start with a to-do list.

Before you start working, take a few minutes to create the list. It’ll seem more manageable once it’s on paper, and as you physically cross things off the list as you go, you’ll be able to gauge your productivity in real time, making adjustments as needed and prioritizing accordingly.

  1. Find some way to amp up your energy.

For me, that’s a vegan chocolate Shakeology shake, some fruit, and some music! If I can resist the urge to slow down, I can get a whole lot done in a short period of time. The right playlist can make all the difference!

This Morning’s Playlist:

LeAnne Dlamini – Je T’aime

Major Lazer Ft PARTYNEXTDOOR & Nicki Minaj – Run Up

DJ Khaled Ft Rihanna & Bryson Tiller – Wild Thoughts

Charly Black – Gyal You A Party Animal

French Montana Ft Swae Lee – Unforgettable

Chance the Rapper – the entire “Coloring Book” album

Dealing with the low energy that comes with returning from a slack week, or a vacation, or even a lazy weekend is just going to be the reality some work days. Coming up with a strategy that tackles it head on is going to prove key to your success in your sphere.
